Science Webquest
The Gas Laws
hot air balloons

By Gary Williams
Sikeston Junior High

This webquest is designed for 9th grade
physical science students.

Introduction

Lets make you the teacher.  You are responsible for explaining two of the gas laws to a class of students.  You will do this by telling the class information about the authors of these laws, introducing the actual laws and selecting activities you think can illustrate the laws effectively. The better you are at explaining these laws the better your students will learn them and the better grade you will get on this assignment.

The Task

You are in charge of explaining the two primary gas laws to a class of students. To do this you will give a brief history of two of the scientists involved with the gas laws. You will then state the laws and come up with examples and demonstrations to illustrate them.

The Process

1. Make a title page for your project. This title page should include the title of this project, your name, class period and a picture that deals with the topic. BE CREATIVE!!!

2. Find pictures of Robert Boyle and Jacques Charles give a brief history of these two scientist and explain what they had to do with the gas laws.

3. State Charle’s and Boyle’s Laws in your paper.

3. Find out what the kinetic theory of matter is. How does this theory relate to the Gas Laws?

4. Find an example of Boyle’s and Charle’s laws in action. (Demonstration) Try to find something that is in everyday life. Explain how this demonstration shows the law. If you have trouble finding demonstrations you can find example problems using the two laws. Make sure you completely explain how to get the answers to these problems.

5. Find a lab activity that applies to Boyle’s and Charle’s Laws. Make sure you completely Explain these activities and tell the materials needed to do the activities. At the end of these activities explain how the experiment helps to illustrate the laws. (What the students would find out)

6. Bibliography of sources used in this project.

Conclusion

See if this project gave you a better understanding of the laws by answering these questions about the laws.

1. What would happen if you placed a balloon in the freezer? Does Charle's or Boyle's  law apply to this?

2. What would happen to a balloon if you blew it up while in a submarine 500 meters under the ocean and then surfaced?  Does Charle's or Boyle's law apply to this?

3. After reading over your material do you think students will understand the laws? What could you add to your information to make it easier to understand?
